What could possibly be more wonderful than cinema?
Who among us has never dreamed of dazzling beneath the spotlights on the red carpet of some glamorous seaside film festival, surrounded by movie stars? Or reclining comfortably in a VIP lounge on Hollywood Boulevard, leisurely sipping a chilled glass of Château Haut-Brion?
Kissing Alain Delon by the edge of a cool swimming pool, making love to the enchanting Catherine Deneuve deep in the jungles of Indochina, or racing across the rooftops of Paris alongside Jean-Paul Belmondo, escaping yet another impossible pursuit.
There is just one small problem. In cinema, as in life, not everyone gets the leading role.
Do you know anyone who has spent a lifetime dreaming of being an extra? I certainly don't. Just imagine it: patiently waiting for your cue, freezing in an unheated trailer, celebrating the chance of appearing in a close-up, only to discover at the premiere that you've been cut from the film anyway.
Because the greatest injustice in life is not that someone else gets the leading role. It is that no one ever explains why.
Do you really think Corinne dreamed of becoming a veteran extra, forever playing the third girl in the fifth row? She imagined herself as Ophelia, Joan of Arc—or, at the very least, Lady Macbeth.
French cinema, however, had very different plans for her: "Quiet on the set! Extras, stand by! Rolling!... Cut!"
Then, one ordinary day, on yet another film set, she is finally given a chance.
What will she do? Stage the perfect intrigue? Set an ingenious trap? Resort to bribery, manipulation, seduction—or a dangerous provocation from which there is no turning back? Don't even try to make sense of this auction of outrageous ideas.
How will it all end? We haven't the slightest idea. But a director who previously gave us Paris Madness and the cult television series Call My Agent! is hardly likely to choose the most predictable path.
Sometimes all it takes to turn an entire story upside down is an actress with nothing left to lose…
