Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the band collaborated with Ukrainian Celtic punk group “O'Hamsters” to record a Ukrainian-language version of the gospel anthem "We Shall Overcome", now a symbol of resistance and human rights. The track features vocals from “O'Hamster’s” lead singer, while Dropkick Murphys provides instrumentals and backing vocals. The music video showcases the work of various Ukrainian artists and encourages donations in support of Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.
From their debut album "Do Or Die" (1998), Dropkick Murphys have incorporated traditional folk elements - most notably bagpipes - into their signature punk sound, characterized by rapid drum beats, a hard-hitting bass, and raw, battle-cry vocals. As their lineup evolved, so did their sound, incorporating instruments like the Irish tin whistle, banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, and accordion, gradually moving away from conventional punk rock. The current lineup features founding member Ken Casey (bass, vocals), Matt Kelly (drums), James Lynch (guitar), and multi-instrumentalists Tim Brennan and Jeff DaRosa.
The band released its first five albums under the independent punk label "Hellcat Records", gaining a loyal following along the U.S. East Coast through relentless touring. Their first major international hit, "Tessie" (2004), brought them widespread recognition, but it was "I’m Shipping Up to Boston" - featured in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime thriller "The Departed" (2006) - that solidified their status as a powerhouse rock band.
